Over the (MOSTEIRO SINGEVERGA (Roriz))
MONASTERY SINGEVERGA (Benedictine) - RORIZ The Singeverga Monastery is the only male monastery in Portugal, following the Rule of St. Benedict. It was founded in 25.01.1892 in the town of Roriz, Santo Tirso, by monks from Cucujães, which started the restoration of Benedictine life, after the extinction of the Religious Orders in 1834. As the founders were still living, the monks settled in the agricultural facilities of the farmhouse Singeverga, thanks to the donation made by Gouveia Azevedo family to the Benedictine Order. With the proclamation of the Republic, had to disperse and go into exile in Maredesous (Belgium) and, above all, in Samos (Galicia). Stay only as the founding family chaplain, Fr. Manuel Baptista de Oliveira Ramos, which after elevation Singeverga the degree of Conventual Priory, was appointed Prior by the Holy See, on May 9, 1922. However, the monks returned from Samos (1926), were to settle in Falperra (Braga) to not commit, with any rushed resolution, all that prudence of Father Baptista Ramos had managed to save. On April 15, 1931, as the political orderthat began in 1926, under the command of General Gomes da Costa, revenge in Portugal, imposing normality and giving freedom to the Church and its institutions, the community leaves and comes from Falperra to Singeverga, which starts in full monastic life in the convent.
